Human Trafficking Suspect Shot in U.S. Arizona

(MENAFN) A man remains in critical condition following a shooting involving U.S. Border Patrol agents in Arizona on Tuesday morning, law enforcement officials confirmed.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department dispatched units to the scene in Arivaca, an unincorporated community located roughly 16 km north of the U.S.-Mexico border within Pima County, local media reported.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos identified the suspect as Patrick Gary Schlegel, an Arizona resident, during a press briefing addressing the confrontation.

The encounter began approximately 7:30 a.m. local time (1430 GMT) when Border Patrol agents spotted a vehicle they believed was connected to a man wanted for suspected human trafficking from a previous incident.

"When they made that traffic stop, the lone occupant, the driver, fled on foot," Nanos explained. "The border patrol agent chased after him on foot. Shortly thereafter, shots were fired by the suspect and the agent returned fire. The suspect was hit."

Authorities apprehended the individual following the exchange of gunfire and arranged immediate transport for emergency medical treatment, local media outlets reported.

The sheriff's department stated it is conducting the investigation in partnership with the FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Heith Janke, special agent in charge of the FBI's Phoenix division, revealed additional details to media representatives, stating the suspect opened fire on a Border Patrol helicopter in addition to ground agents during the violent incident.
